CNN contributors Scott Jennings and Bakari Sellers debated President-elect Donald Trump’s claims that he would lower high food prices for consumers Thursday on CNN, with Jennings at one point advising Sellers not to touch it.
“During the campaign, Donald Trump said he was going to lower prices,” Sellers said, calling Trump’s comments a “lie.”
“One of the things we know is that Scott was actually 50% correct and that the Democrats didn’t do a good job of telling our story,” Sellers said. “We didn’t do a good job of addressing the pain that Americans felt.”
“One of the mistakes we made during the Biden presidency was that inflation was temporary,” Sellers continued. “These things were not correct because there are people who were out there feeling the pain of the price of eggs.”
“What Scott wasn’t correct about, which sometimes happens around the table, though I know you want to be,” Sellers continued, reaching out to touch Scott’s arm.
“Don’t touch me,” Jennings told a laughing Sellers as he patted her on the back, prompting CNN anchor Abby Phillip to respond.
“Okay, everyone keep your hands to yourselves at the table,” Phillip said.
It wasn’t clear if Jennings was actually angry, but he wasn’t smiling when the camera cut to him.
Retailers continued to debate the role of the Biden administration in reducing inflation, particularly at grocery stores.
“This is not Joe Biden’s policy,” Sellers said.
“Yes it is,” Jennings replied. “Of course it is.”
“Of course it isn’t,” Sellers said, arguing that inflation was caused by the COVID pandemic. “You know what happened around the globe? You had rising inflation across the globe. Do you know who handled this issue? Joe Biden addressed this issue.”
“One of the things that Scott was right about again is that the Democrats didn’t label it: This is Trumpflation,” Sellers said.
Trump has said that high food prices helped him defeat Vice President Kamala Harris.
“I won on the border and I won on groceries,” Trump said in an interview on NBC News’ “Meet the Press.”
“Very simple word, groceries. Like almost – you know, who uses the word? I started using the word – food. “When you buy apples, when you buy bacon, when you buy eggs, they would double and triple the price for a short period of time, and I won the election based on that,” Trump said.
In an interview with Time published Thursday after he was named the 2024 Person of the Year, Trump noted that it would be “very difficult” to lower food prices but hoped to do so with tight supply chains and increased production. of energy.
